SMALLTOWN is a little acoustic project that does ummm... music. It's been said that it sounds

like acoustic punk. Hmmm.... sounds okay to me.

About the album "1996"
"Nine songs in nine hours."
Nine songs in nine hours, that's kind of the idea behind this album. I only used eight of the nine songs, but I'm proud of the speed at which I did it. My voice was no good though for almost all of the songs, but I hadn't warmed up that day or the day before. Some of it's out of tune singing, unsynched instruments or just poor quality recording, but it is what it is. Oh, well, next time right? I'm just happy I finally did it and that I have stuff on it with some of my friends; it's all I've ever wanted. I didn't want all these music tracks that sounded like one long session, I wanted an anthology of sound. Songs that existed for a certain time and place which were documented. That's what it's about to me.

1. I miss the trains -recorded at Ruben's studio out in Edgewood, NM. I went with my girlfriend and just punched it out in a couple of takes.
2. 100% Artificial -This is from the same session with Ruben. It's just something I wrote for Billy Bragg who has some of the best socio/political lyrics ever.
3. You sunk my battleship -was just from some footage I shot with Brandon. In it he's trying to float a table upside down in an abandoned "public" swimming pool. It sunk. Can you hear that squeaking? It's bats.
4. Abnormal (Rob Mix) -I did this one afternoon at my parents house, I'm guessing mid 2000.
5. Two minute conversation -From the Ruben sessions, I hope it sounds like I'm playing in the room with you. That's the sound I was looking for.
6. Chrock -is a short for something, but I won't tell. You'll have to figure it out it if you care to. This was recorded in my old apartment I had in Gallup, NM during my senior year in high school, late '99. This kid had a really cool analog delay pedal, that's why this sounds trippy. I ran the track through it. I really like this "captured moment" or song if it's less fruity.
7. Drunk with concern -I can't say anything about this, it would just ruin it for you. I will say that this video tape almost got me in trouble. People would randomly stop by my apartment just to watch it. In the end I learned two things, drunk people are funny to watch , even on TV and don't lie about your actions. It's a long, long story.
8. Anne Dream A Day -The ruben sessions '02. If you want to know anything about this song some to a show. This is for dreamland. and Sheenah.
9. Untitled for you -Brandon shot this footage of me playing at the Blue Dragon (Coffee House, Indian School and Girard, Albuquerque, NM :end plug.) It was open mic night and I think late summer/early fall of 2000. My hair was long and I looked katarded. No that wasn't a misspelling, stupid.
10. Her song -Ruben sessions '02. What can I say? Written for an amazing woman.
11. German Daniel's eye -More footage in late '99. I hung out with the foreign kids. They were a lot of fun. I haven't heard from Daniel in a long time, I hope he's good.
12. Impatient -Ruben Sessions '02. I'm singing with myself. I find it funny for some reason. I came up with the harmonies while listening to this song in my car. Hurray for traffic.
13. 1996 -It's just a melancholy instrumental for remembering about the old days. 1996 was a fun year and to me that's when good music died.
14. My broken song -Break up songs are weak. So I took all the songs I wrote about the demise of this relationship and just put it all in one song. Hopefully, it's blunt and straight forward, no rhetorical bullshit.
15. You're a nation -the next day Brandon was evicted from his apartment. This is Josh pissing. What a good time! Viva la eviction!! and Alcohol! and public YOU'REANATION! So what, it's a lame play on words.
16. Bored -Ruben Sessions '02. This is about Brandon's love for fir water. He came to the studio that day with the idea to do backing vocals. Someday Bran, someday.
17. Abnormal(trip mix) -This is for when you leave your home and take a... no that's lame. I've always like this first version and recording of this song. This was done in the fall of '99.
18. Impatient(Rob Mix) -This is just to give you a taste of what I'd really like to do. Yeah I'm playing all the instuments and recording myself. I'll play drums better next time, I swear. I'm a guitarist trying to play the drums.
19. Paula and Lance -I'm guessing this is from late '98. I can't remember anything except it was cold that night. I haven't talked to Paula or Lance in a really long time. They were some of the best friends I had.
20. Somnia -I wrote this and showed it to Paula. This is from early '99. I told her I'd sell 100,000 copies of her voice. It remains to be seen.
21. Simplicity -Done in late '00. Sheenah laid down the keyboard track to this beat I had on my computer. Over time I finally finished and polished up the track.
22. DJ Whitey wishes you a merry xmas -Or John as we like to call him. I caught this on film back in late '99 and didn't find it until recently. I thought it was and still do now, so I put it on here. It's just props to John cuz he's funny like that.
23. Anti-logik -A bunch of guys yelling, a beat and some acoustic guitar. The first release I worked on was a compilation album. This was the theme. '98 or '99. It was that kind of party.
24. The Movement- My friend Kieran said it best, "political break beat." The samples are speeches given during the IMF and World Bank marches in Washington DC. It's not so much the corporations that I'm against, it's the greed.
25. The tale of Harriet -Paula is one of the best story tellers. She makes me laugh. This was around late '98 early '99 when she told us this story. I have more and their just as funny.
